Elderly urged to get flu jab now

Elderly people and those with medical conditions are being urged to get a flu jab.

Dr Kate King from Cambridgeshire Health Authority said she wants to remind people there is still time to get the vaccination before the onset of the flu season.

She said: 'Last year, two out of three people aged 65 and over in Cambridgeshire received the flu jab.

'Vaccination can prevent flu and prevent the complications that can follow influenza, such as pneumonia, the need for hospital care and death.

'I would urge anyone over 65 who has not yet made an appointment to contact their surgery now.'

The Government's flu vaccination campaign is on course to reach the target to immunise at least 65 per cent and ideally 70 per cent of over 65s.

Nationally 14 million doses are being supplied to GPs, three million more than last year.
