Explore Independent Cambridge: Catesby’s

With the help of Independent Cambridge - the definitive guide to ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: home lifestyle store and café, Catesby’s.

Green Street has become a real indie shopping destination – a pretty cobbled street with lots of independent shops and cafes, of which one of the finest, Catesby’s, is at No.10 – a beautifully restored 17th Century townhouse that provides the perfect backdrop to this very special home lifestyle store and café.

Luckily for Cambridge, owners Neil Honor and Jonathon Pegg set sail from their original home on the Norfolk coast and moved Catesby’s here in 2014. The downstairs rooms are perfectly laid out to display the beautiful range of goods meticulously sourced from across Europe, from rare fragrances to handmade ceramics and much, much more.

Everything is carefully chosen for its timeless quality – equally suited to contemporary or classic homes alike – with a muted colour palette and seasonal accents, making for a very tranquil feel (though Christmas time at the shop is rather more opulent and has to be seen to be believed!).

If beautiful, useful and original are Catesby’s watchwords downstairs, then real, honest and local best describe their upstairs café, tucked away from the bustle of the street on the first floor. In this calm, bright space Jonathon and his team serves up a range of delicious homemade sandwiches, salads, cakes and drinks – using as much locally-sourced produce as possible. Try the Catesby’s Rarebit – it’s become his signature dish!
