Explore Independent Cambridge - Cheryl Warren Art

With the help of Independent Cambridge - the community of ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, people, businesses, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: Cheryl Warren Art.

Upon first glance Cheryl Warren’s landscape paintings are a striking blend of brushstrokes, some characterised by smudges of vivid colour, others dominated by thick charcoal streaks. There’s depictions of morning mist over a Cornish moor, an explosion of spring flowers at Haslingfield or an expanse of eerie fenland. They’re fascinating and captivating, but to Cheryl, each semi-abstract piece portrays so much more. They capture a moment in time, immortalising the landscape, the lighting, the atmosphere, the weather and her emotions.

Working from sketches and photographs in her studio in Kidman’s Yard – a thriving artistic community – Cheryl commits her memories to canvas, building up the imagery in layers. Her eye-catching style has attracted buyers from around the world and her paintings are in galleries in London, Winchester and Cambridge.

Though modest about her achievements, Cheryl’s training includes studying sculpture at Bretton Hall, mixed media at Goldsmiths plus an art therapy MA. She’s exhibited in London and launched Burwash Art in Barton, which she passed on in 2015 (now The Art Hound Gallery).

These days, she’s happiest in overalls, using her grandmother’s oil paints to bring breath-taking landscapes to life.

Throughout this year, Cheryl will be opening her studio (address below), the first Sunday of every month, with work for sale plus tea and cake. You can also see her work on display at Espresso Library on East Road up until 20 March.
