Explore Independent Cambridge: Cutlacks

With the help of Independent Cambridge - the community of ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, people, businesses, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: Cutlacks.

While smart technology advances at lightning speed - Alexa, Hive and Echo becoming part of our vocabulary - there’s a growing number of us who yearn for the ‘Good Life’ - the idea of growing our own and living a self-sufficient lifestyle proving incredibly appealing.

It’s a vision championed by friendly, family-run home and garden store Cutlacks, which has premises on Mill Road, Cambridge, and Forehill, Ely, and has been trading for 20 years.

Welcoming customers with the promise of “all that’s best in home and garden”, the company prides itself on helping people create their own home-grown products, from jam and chutney to beer and wine. The Cambridge store features a dedicated home brewing room, with a vast array of DIY kits, whether your preferred tipple be an American mocha porter or a full-bodied Merlot. For gardening buffs, there’s a variety of seeds, plus a tempting selection of plants. There’s even a couple of traditional fruit presses, available for hire, should you have fruit-laden trees ripe for the picking.

Cutlacks’ bakeware selection is a bestseller, offering all the essentials, from bread proving baskets and Nordic Ware bundt pans to Paul Hollywood pastry cutters and Yorkshire pudding tins. There’s kitchenware from innovative brand Joseph Joseph, lovely tablecloths, fine Dartington crystal glasses, and sleek Brabantia bins. And the emphasis is on luxury in the bedding range, which includes duvets and pillows from The Fine Bedding Company. The paint offering at both stores is another draw, featuring Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Designers Guild and eco-friendly line Earthborn.

As impressive as the burgeoning product range, is staff expertise. At the Cambridge store, manager Lee Phillips, assistant manager Sam Whitelegg and their colleagues have clocked up decades of experience. Why not pop in and put their knowledge to the test? You won’t be disappointed.
