Explore Independent Cambridge: Petrus

With the help of Independent Cambridge - the definitive guide to ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: Petrus on Bridge Street.

If you like your clothes to be design-led rather than necessarily label-led, and you appreciate a genuinely honest and personal approach to customer service, then you should pay Petrus a visit.

A five year stay in Amsterdam for owners Petra and Steve Slack before setting up Petrus (first in Saffron Walden and now the Cambridge shop), has
definitely added a European flavour to their venture.

The buying team, led by Petra, is passionate about the use of textures, colours, design and form as well as the comfort and fit of the clothes they choose. These passions are also reflected in the look and feel of the shop too – funky retro-inspired lighting and minimalist fixtures are softened with classic original shop fittings and vintage pieces, all carefully designed and chosen to make visitors feel comfortable – something Petra and her team are particularly good at.  In fact, sometimes customers have even bought some of the fixtures, so items in the shop are constantly changing.

Brands stocked include quirky Dutch brand Sandwich, whose clothes and accessories for women use unusual, high-quality fabrics to create a distinct look; Danish favourite InWear is also very popular.

Not forgetting the guys: Original Penguin is great for casual comfort, and for the smart set, Gibson London is always a winner.  New, unique and unusual men’s and women’s wear pieces are chosen to reflect stylish and contemporary ranges that fit perfectly with the Petrus ethos.
