Not far from the River Cam where it passes Midsummer Common, and situated in the predominantly residential Humberstone Road, is Rowan – a charity and arts centre, set up in 1984, which brings artists and people with learning disabilities together to create the most incredible items of fine artwork and craft.

Many of the pieces made by the students are for sale, including beautiful paintings and prints, ceramics, textiles, sculptures and carved wooden items – the proceeds from which provide essential income for Rowan, allowing them to continue providing collaborative opportunities for creativity and self-expression. The quality of the work is so good that Rowan is regularly commissioned to work on specific pieces and projects around the city and beyond.

As many of the staff are practising artists in their own right, it’s not surprising that the work produced is of such a high standard. But it goes beyond creativity, as each person is nurtured to help them reach their full personal potential, giving them a great sense of self-worth and self-esteem as well as developing their creative skills.

A visit to Rowan brings this sense of empowerment very much to the forefront, particularly if you are able to see the students at work in one of the five studios. Rowan is always welcoming to visitors, just get in touch.

Rowan also holds regular open events and exhibitions and are part of Cambridge’s annual Open Studios – details are on the website or join the mailing list to receive news on what’s coming up.
