Janet Fox of Small & Green with some of her houseplants

With the help of Indie Cambridge - the community of ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, people, businesses, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: Small & Green.

Janet Fox is no stranger to green spaces. A gardener with over 20 years’ experience she is at her happiest out in the elements either weeding a mixed border or pruning a box hedge to perfection. And now the green-fingered Cambridge resident is branching out with her own houseplant business, Small & Green.

Houseplant love has experienced something of a renaissance in recent times and one look at Janet’s Cambridge market stall and it’s easy to see why. Dedicated to helping people bring their garden inside, Janet offers a range of beautiful plants from quirky cacti to her best seller – the Oxalis Triangularis Purpurea. With its butterfly-like petals which close at night and then re-open in the morning, the exotic tongue-twister is a guaranteed head turner. For something a little more traditional her Spotted Begonia is a bit of a favourite with her Cambridge customers, while Janet is keen to impress that something as simple as a pretty potted Ivy never fails to add interest.

Terrariums are also a popular choice on the Small & Green stall. Perfect for people who have a small garden, the glass creation enables you to have your own indoor garden for minimum effort.

While the changing product line is impressive enough, what makes the plants even more special are the pots in which they are sold. Customers can choose from a selection, including concrete, which are handmade by a dynamic craftsperson in this country, an eye-catching crackled pot which Janet has personally sourced and for an ultra-modern option, there is a 3D printed range.

Most of the plants are sourced from a local wholesaler, while the cacti comes from a family-run business in the Midlands.

So, whether you’re looking for a special gift idea or simply want to create a room with a bloom, why not pay Small & Green a visit, you’ll be glad you did!

Head on over to Stir Cafe (Chesterton Road) this Saturday 8th February, where Small & Green is popping up from 2pm-5.30pm with Valentine’s Day present ideas which will last a lot longer than the usual box of chocolates!
