Fatal accidents more than double

The number of fatal road crashes in Cambridgeshire more than doubled in the first quarter of this year, compared to 1999.

The shock figures show 33 deaths in 27 crashes since January, compared to 12 deaths in 12 collisions between January and April last year.

Cambridgeshire police's casualty reduction officer, PC Vic Smith, says the force works hard to educate motorists about safe driving, but fears the message isn't getting through.

He is now urging all road users to heed the latest tragic figures and take more care while driving.
