Flooding - New flood warnings after more rain

12-12-2000

More heavy rain together with high tides have prompted new flood

warnings to be issued for Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire.

The areas affected are the River Nene at the Dog in a Doublet Sluice

and the River Great Ouse at Welney, and between Newport Pagnell and St

Ives.

A number of lower grade 'flood watches' have also been put in place on

several rivers including the Nene, Welland and the River Kym.

It follows the wettest autumn since records began in 1766 and fifteen

days of consecutive rain in East Anglia.

The Environment Agency said: 'Rivers are already flowing at high levels,

catchments are saturated and conditions are expected to remain that way

over the winter.

'The consequence is that even moderate rainfall can trigger fresh risks

of flooding.'

Residents who think they may be affected by flooding are being urged to

contact the Environment Agency's floodline on 0845 988 1188.
