Cricketing legends, sporting stars, vintage cars and much more at Essex County ground

Cricketing legend, Sir Viv Richards locks horns with Mike Gatting OBE this Sunday, 5 August as the Bunbury XI take on the Ashwell Crusaders XI in a celebrity cricket match at Essex County Ground.

The match is just part of an action-packed day for all the family that is set to raise vital funds for Sargent Cancer Care for Children.

Bunbury captain Sir Viv leads a star-studded team that includes entertainer David Essex, actor Leslie Grantham, footballers Lee Dixon and Phil Robinson from Arsenal and Chelsea and Matt Dawson fresh from the British Lions tour in Australia.

With players in Mike Gatting's Crusaders such as West Indies cricketers Collis King, Richie Richardson and Alvin Kallicharran, joining county players, Roy Male, from Addenbrookes NHS Trust in Cambridge, and Paul Thwaites, Chief Executive of Ashwell Group, the crowd can expect an entertaining day's cricket.

Mike Gatting - a director of Ashwell Leisure Ltd - says 'Sir Viv is an old friend and I am thoroughly looking forward to the challenge. I know that the day will be a great success with much needed funds being raised for the Sargent Cancer for Children Charity.'

At just 8 entry for adults, with children under 16 getting in free, Sunday promises to be a fun day out for all the family with plenty to see and do. Tickets are available on the day and all proceeds will go to the Sargent Cancer Care for Children East Anglia Appeal.

Gates open at 11.00 am with the chance to see the Under IXs Kwik Cricket tournament, featuring teams from Cambridge and Essex, umpired by Mike Gatting.

At the same time, some of the greatest vintage cars in Great Britain will arrive at the ground, welcomed by a bagpipe band, and will be followed by Sargent Cancer Care for Children mascot Beefy Bear, delivering match balls, bails and umpire by an Army Air Corps helicopter. The main cricket match starts at 2 pm.

Mastermind behind the event, Paul Thwaites, Chief Executive of East Anglian property company, Ashwell Group said: 'We are delighted to have gathered together such stars from the sporting and entertainment world to participate in what we hope will be a very special and memorable day for all who come along on Sunday.

'As well as special autograph signings by celebrities during the day, we also have some great raffle prizes, 'bowl and bat', one of the greatest collections of vintage cars in Great Britain to see, food and drink available, and some terrific cricket. And of course, we must not forget the opportunity for everyone to shake hands with Beefy Bear!

'It's all in aid of a good cause, and I would urge everyone to show their support and enjoy this family day out.'

Manager of the Bunbury IX, David English said: 'It will be great to support Paul Thwaites, who does so much for cricket, and his wife Sarah, the regional chairperson for the Sargent Cancer for Children Appeal.'
