Going social? Then get visual

It’s now very common knowledge among marketers that humans are visual creatures and thus visual content can drive sales and improve the success of content marketing. We've seen a sharp increase recently in social media channels really starting to take this seriously and using this to benefit their business.

Take YouTube Red for example; it is a similar service to Netflix but not available in the UK. It’s been reported that they’ve approached all partner creators to sign their new licence agreement (at a 55% royalty rate) or their content will become private. Seems ruthless but they have identified that the visual aspect of their business is making their partners serious money and as it’s their platform, they want in on this.

Over on Pinterest earlier this month, they launched their new visual search tool. They describe it as a bit of ‘crazy fun’ in their blog detailing the new tool but actually is likely to massively improve and increase the usage of the social media platform once it’s perfected. Indeed, how many times have you wished you could enter an image into a search engine to find it for you?

And Twitter have introduced their new poll capability – everyone loves a quick and easy percentage-led table of results!

So why is visual so effective? Simply because that’s how our brains are wired. Tweets with images are retweeted more by 150% and receive 89% more likes. We also retain 80% of what we see compared to 20% of what we read and 10% of what we hear.

With this information, it’s now important that you use it for your own social media. It’s not enough to be social anymore, you need to also keep up with how to go social. The internet is so full of information that you really do only have a brief moment to catch your audience’s attention; how can you do this?

1) Including visuals means your performance improves drastically. Great. But you need to make sure they are good quality visuals. Well-designed infographics, not something you’ve just put together on Paint. Well lit, attractive photographs rather than stretched grainy images.

2) Moving images can create emotional responses. Is your product or service not visual or particularly exciting? Use videos to make it easier to understand.

3) Use visual to improve your company’s credibility. A good website design can be the deciding factor in a consumer or potential client’s decision to make contact. Make sure it matches your company’s purpose paying attention to layout, consistency throughout and images.
