Horse causes accident on M11 motorway

A runaway horse caused a serious accident when it ran loose onto the M11 motorway last night.

It happened when the horse escaped from a nearby field onto the road just north of junction 12 in Cambridgeshire. A Renault Megane was in collision with the animal, killing it instantly.



The driver, a 72-year-old man from Bottisham, escaped injury but a Vauxhall Carlton then collided with the dead horse and overturned.



The 44-year-old man driving the car escaped injury but two of his passengers - a 50-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl - both suffered chest injuries.Their injuries are not thought to be serious. A third passenger - an 11-year-old boy - was uninjured. All four occupants of the car are from Essex.



The M11 was closed for more than three hours following the accident at around 11pm last night. Police are appealing for witnesses.
