If you are a business that doesn’t know or understand SEO… potentially you aren’t gaining as much attention from customers as you could be on search engines.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is, put simply, a selection of methods you achieve to improve your ranking on Google. The higher your ranking is, the higher your website/webpage will be on the search results, making it more likely that users will click onto your page - this is known as organic traffic.

There are a number of different ways users can visit your website. Such as:

  • Direct traffic: Where a user visits the website/page with no referral, so they didn’t discover the URL from sites like search engines, social media or blogs etc. but more or less a direct URL type into a browser.
  • Referral traffic: Where users come to your site from external sources, such as social media or a whole new website.
  • Social traffic: Where users source from a social media network such as Facebook or Twitter.
  • Paid traffic: Where a business or organisation pays to direct traffic to their site. This is also known as an unnatural search result. 

There are many ways you can improve your SEO. However, I want to just focus on one method today… and that is keywords. Keywords are a huge part of the SEO process, as they essentially help communicate from user to search engine to explain what your content is about. If done correctly, Google and other search engines are able to place you in the right category and determine whether your content is relevant to a particular search query - the more relevant it is, the higher your ranking will be.

As basic as this sounds, it’s vital that you understand that in order for these keywords to be valid and work, they need to be positioned to make sense for the audience and in enough places to be recognised by the search engines.

After you have chosen your appropriate keywords, it is time to start including them in your content. So where should we include them, you ask? Here are five easy ways you can place keywords in your digital content to improve your SEO.

1. Page Titles

A page title describes the focus subject of your particular page. It is the first thing your audience will see and search engines will significantly keep an eye out for it too. Therefore, it would be a good idea to present a title that is engaging and relevant. For tools like WordPress, you will have two titles - one that will be shown on the open blog page, and one that will be shown on places like search engines, known as an SEO Title. 

It’s important to remember you don’t always have to include the focus keyword in both titles, however, what is important is it is included in the SEO Title, as that is the main one search engines focus on. After all, there is a reason it is called an SEO Title, right? Therefore, target your SEO keywords in your page titles as greatly as you can, it can really help you.

2. Meta Descriptions

Metas are essentially ‘blurbs’ of a blog - it is a basic description of what to expect from the article you are about to open. These are important because they can be featured on blog pages (usually under the title) and under titles in search engines. 

Although it’s no longer a direct ranking element, search engines can use it to help determine the content’s relevancy in comparison to what users are searching for. Including your SEO keyword(s) in this description will allow sites like Google understand and push you towards the top of the page.  

3. Images

As well as significantly assisting on the appearance of the page, images can be extremely useful for SEO too. Moreover, not only are you able to sneakily add the keyword to your image's caption and alt tag, but they are also indexed, meaning they can be another way for people to discover your content. However, regarding the indexing, not all images will be indexed. This is usually because Google doesn’t believe the image is relevant to the content, and will, therefore, avoid it completely.

So how and where can we use SEO keywords in images? Well, whilst making sure the image you choose to use is relevant, apply the keywords to the image caption and alt text. In comparison, image captions are usually visible to the audience and will be found underneath (or anywhere near) the image, whereas alt text will just stay hidden and is used for accessibility reasons. This technique is probably the most low-key, so you should definitely consider giving it a go.

4. URLs

Whilst not many people tend to focus on the URL of a website/page, there are also a number of people that identify these as a big turn off if they are crammed with random letters and numbers. When creating content, you have the ability to edit the URL, to keep it short, simple and professional for readers.

You would be surprised at how many people overlook this opportunity, as it genuinely can turn away potential customers or readers. Back on topic, including your SEO keywords or phrases into the URL can help give Google an initiative about the content’s topic, but a clean impression for those readers and URL judgers. 

5. Subheadings

Last, but certainly not least… subheadings. These are smaller titles that are added into your content for better readability. With subheadings, you are able to separate the text into appropriate topics, giving the reader an easier idea of what the blog will discuss. Essentially, they are little “pause buttons” to give the reader a chance to take a breather. 

In addition to this, due to their assistance on topic relevancy, the best practice would be to use keywords in a few of your subheadings. Depending on the length and obviousness of the keyword/phrase, including it in at least one subheading can help improve your SEO.

Try not to think always in terms of keywords. Great content also goes a long way - if your subject is engaging and on-topic, your business is already on the right path.
