Independent Cambridge - art and artistry

In a regular series of articles on this site, the Cambridge Network joins with Independent Cambridge to celebrate the fantastic range of independent retailers we have on our doorstep. Read this week about Makers’ Gallery.

Hope Street Yard comes up trumps again on the indie front, as just upstairs from Hugh’s amazing collection of Dutch bikes, is home to the Makers’ Gallery, where owner Neil Christie has transformed the space into a gallery as well as framing studio.

Having worked at Rowan for 12 years – making sculptures from wood, stone, metal and clay, Neil felt his creative ambitions were better  realised through setting up his own business.  A self-taught artist, who for many years has run painting and drawing classes at various places including Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam Museum, Neil sees being independent work-wise a creative thing too.

At the core of his venture is the bespoke framing service. Using his artistic eye as well as his practical skills, Neil produces all the framing work himself from an extensive selection of mounts and mouldings. As you can imagine, with his many years of working with a wide range of materials, help and advice is always on offer, however creative or unusual the framing request.

Adjacent to the framing studio is the gallery space where Neil has the opportunity to exhibit his own paintings, drawings and sculptures. This ‘artspace’ is also home to life-drawing classes taught by Neil – giving him the chance to share his life-long passion for art. The classes are for those over 16 and his aim is to give newcomers to life-drawing a friendly introduction, while providing more experienced artists with the chance to develop their study at
their own pace.
