Melles Griot plans move to Ely

High technology manufacturer has joined the growing number of local companies to move out of the immediate Cambridge area.

The company, part of a multinational group that is a world leader in lasers and electro-optic technology, is amalgamating its manufacturing and administrative operations - currently at Cottenham and Waterbeach respectively - to a single site at Cambridgeshire Business Park, Ely.

It will occupy a new purpose-built two-storey office/light industrial building at Angel Drove, providing a total of 2,834 square metres (30,500 sq ft) on a 1.5 acre site. Construction has already begun and the move is expected to take place early next year.

Managing director Norman Pratt commented: 'We have a total of 85 people, who will all benefit from the improved communications and production efficiencies we anticipate as a result of being located on a single site. Ultimately, this means better service for our customers, which is our prime objective.'

In the UK, Melles Griot Ltd specialises in the design and manufacture of both vibration-isolated optical tables, and positioning equipment for precision alignment of optical fibres and micro-optic components. Its products are used extensively in research and development laboratories and in industrial applications, where highly stable positioning equipment is proving critical for the manufacture of telecommunications and other electronic devices.

The company has a further UK operation, Melles Griot Technical Optics in the Isle of Man, which develops and makes optics and optical coatings for high energy laser applications.
