Cambridge MP joins police officers on day-time patrol through the city

8/01/2019

Daniel Zeichner, Member of Parliament for Cambridge, has joined police officers for a day during a day-time city patrol to get an insight into challenges local police are experiencing when out on-the-beat. Following the patrol Mr Zeichner also met with Cambridgeshire’s new Chief Constable Nick Dean and discussed the priorities for the force over the next few months.

Daniel Zeichner, MP for Cambridge, said: “It was an extremely valuable experience to go out on patrol with the officers and it reaffirmed my view that there are many different worlds co-existing in the city of Cambridge.

“What I got from the day was the importance of neighbourhood policing to provide support and reassurance to a local community after it becomes victim to a crime. I was very pleased to hear the new Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire Constabulary Nick Dean express strong support for community policing when we discussed this after, but he can only work with the resources available to him, and that is a political choice.

“I know that real term cuts to budgets and rising levels of complex crime is putting immense pressure on local police but I saw first-hand a force working tirelessly to keep Cambridge safe. I would like to thank the officers that I joined for the day. These officers are constantly dealing with very difficult situations and I was impressed with their professionalism and dedication to the job.”

This engagement with the police was one of many Mr Zeichner has been part of since becoming the MP for Cambridge. Mr Zeichner meets regularly with the Police and Crime Commissioner of Cambridgeshire Constabulary and Cambridge’s Superintendent to discuss cases and concerns that residents raise with him. The relationship is positive with Cambridgeshire Constabulary being very engaged with the City’s MP.

Over the past 18 months Mr Zeichner has noted a rise in the number of residents that contact him with concerns about the pressures of the police force, which Mr Zeichner feels is a reflection of the growing pressures the force is facing.
