This weekend (24-25th June), Peterborough’s Allia Future Business Centre hosts >Sudo Hack 2017, a free overnight hackathon challenging entrants to build a smart city using the Internet of Things.

Teams will be challenged in one of three environments – a recycling system, an office, or a bike & car park – to measure data and think of the best way to use this information to improve anything from safety to efficiency, quality of service to cost. Each challenge environment has been carefully constructed to give participants the opportunity to use IoT technology to solve real-world problems.

You will be tooled up with a range of gear for testing and prototyping alongside specialist IoT developer kits provided by the Digital Catapult and RealVNC.” says Anna Jordan, Allia’s event lead for the >Sudo hack.

The Allia centre at has been fitted with a number of IoT radio networks to simulate various parts of a smart city and a starter kit of sensors and hardware are being provided to help entrants bring their ideas online. On Sunday, hacks will be put to the test in a live demo given to a panel of expert judges.

‘The Internet of Things is growing exponentially, and so is its potential to make a positive impact on people, planet or place,’ says Paul Hughes, Director of Enterprise Support at Allia. ‘We want to encourage >Sudo Hack participants to leverage this growing technology and create innovative solutions to local and global challenges, in just 32 hours.
