New public art project for CB1 Cambridge
Artist Lucy Harrison will today launch an artist’s publication and public artwork at Murdoch House, entitled ‘The Works’. The piece has been commissioned by developers Brookgate and Hill as part of the ongoing public art programme alongside the delivery of CB1, the new city quarter being built around Cambridge station.
It aims to celebrate the site’s rich industrial history and evolution into the residential and business district it has now become, and has involved local residents and employees in exploring their relationships to work and daily routine.
‘The Works’ consists of a series of panels on the exterior of Murdoch House, and an artist’s book that will be available in various locations in Cambridge, including from the ELAN artist studio, Mill Park, off Station Road.
The panels on the outside of the building represent the seven days of the week and will be displayed over the summer.
‘The Works’ is one component of a collection of public artworks which is being delivered by Commission Projects, as part of the CB1 development. In July last year, Lucy began a detailed research project into the area’s former printing, railway, building, and building supply businesses. She spoke to past and present residents and workers, including from the railway and from Microsoft Research.
To celebrate the continued prominence of the Cambridge University Press, Lucy printed some letter press typefaces at the Historical Printing Room at Cambridge University Library to incorporate into the work. The project also uses archive images from Cambridge University Press as well as from the Cambridgeshire Collection and Ridgeons.
Lucy Harrison, artist, said: “I am interested in how places change and what remains of the past in people’s memories. In this project I was trying to reflect on the changing nature of work in this area and to highlight the echoes of people’s daily routines in previous years.”
A spokesperson at Brookgate, said: “’The Works’ is a fascinating piece of art which bridges the gap between the past and present industry at CB1. We are pleased to be working with Commission Projects to ensure that public art plays a role in the cultural growth and transformation of this new city quarter for Cambridge.”
