GSM operator Connect Austria, which trades under the brand name ONE, has chosen Geneva to support the rollout of its GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) offerings.
ONE selects Geneva for GPRS services
Geneva, which will support the delivery of current and future GPRS offerings over ONE's GSM 1800 network, was selected because of its flexibility in allowing new services to be brought to market quickly.
In the two years since its launch, ONE has emerged as one of the fastest growing GSM operators in Europe, with a customer base in excess of 1,150,000 mobile users, a network covering 97% of the Austrian population, and roaming agreements with 204 network operators across 101 countries. The company is gaining market share by offering a wide variety of data and voice services, including services delivered via WAP. Residential and corporate users will have access to voice telephony, mobile Internet, information and entertainment services. ONE's GPRS services will provide a stepping-stone for the introduction of services based on UMTS, for which the company was awarded a license in November 2000.
The implementation of Geneva was time-critical, as ONE was looking to respond to competitive pressures and bring its new GPRS products to market in the first quarter of 2001. Systems integrator Logica worked closely with Geneva Technology to meet a very tight deadline, and the partnership has successfully completed the core installation in just three months. Geneva has been integrated with ONE's existing mediation platform and its legacy billing system in order to provide a smooth migration.
According to Peter Pedersen, CIO of ONE, the company was looking for a system that could support any combination of services and enable pricing models to be modified quickly if required. 'As the market for GPRS services grows, so too will the need for greater flexibility in respect of pricing and the ability to respond to market conditions. We feel very confident that by investing in Geneva, we have bought a billing system that is truly future proof.'
Stephen Newton, General Manager of EMEA at Geneva Technology, noted that Geneva's ability to provide fully convergent billing for voice, data and content services will enable ONE to differentiate its new GPRS products.
'We are delighted that Geneva has been chosen by one of the most dynamic GSM operators and one of the first to make its choice of a billing system for GPRS.'
In October 1998, the communications company ONE launched Austria's only nation-wide GSM-1800 mobile telephony network. At the end of the year 2000, ONE had 1,400 employees and 1.3 million customers (mobile, fixed line and Internet). Net turnover in 2000 amounts to ATS 5.8 bn. ONE has a population coverage of 97%. Besides mobile telephony, ONE also offers the Internet product i-ONE, the fixed-line solution f-ONE, and - together with Priority Telecom - the convergence product Take Two.
