Plans submitted for further development at CB1
Brookgate has submitted plans for two new buildings at CB1 that will bring new amenities to the area and facilitate changes to the access arrangements at Station Square, easing congestion and improving the travel experience when arriving or departing from Cambridge Station.
The new buildings will be located on part of the existing station car park, between Carter Bridge and Great Northern Road. Located behind the Ibis hotel will be a multi-storey car park with a hotel above. Across the road, a Business Innovation Centre is planned with a mix of office and co-working space to re-house small firms based at the CB1 Business Centre, when its current base at 20 Station Road is redeveloped in a few years’ time.
There has been extensive liaison with local residents and pre-application meetings with the City Council which have jointly led to design changes from the original scheme proposed. A new street scene will be created between Devonshire Road and Station Square and all commuter parking on the site will be replaced in full in the new multi-storey car park.
As part of the planning application Brookgate will facilitate a change in access arrangements to Station Square which is being promoted by the City and County Councils. A new access into Station Square will be instated from Station Road, allowing taxis to enter and exit from this direction. This will split traffic flows into Station Square and reduce the number of vehicles currently using Great Northern Road, which has been a cause of concern for local residents. Space will also be allocated along Station Road for a ‘feeder rank’ for taxis to wait before joining the main station taxi rank.
