'50 Best' Guide now on PDAs

Independent Digital (UK) Limited, the digital publishing subsidiary of Independent News and Media (UK) Limited today announced the availability of the '50 Best' guide for personal digital assistant (PDA) users. The guide will be provided through Roundpoint's unique system for distributing content to a wide variety of platforms, and exemplifies a new commercially viable subscription-based model for digital publishing.

The '50 Best' guide is an immensely popular weekly supplement to the Independent newspaper that researches a variety of consumer categories such as restaurants, galleries, and holiday destinations, and showcases the 50 best selections in each. Through Roundpoint's content delivery system, subscribers will now be able to read a compilation of 50 of the '50 Best' guides on their handhelds. The compilation costs 10 and is available for immediate use through the Independent's web site www.independent.co.uk

The Independent explored several methods for generating revenue from its digital content before choosing the Roundpoint solution.

'Roundpoint's system is the best technology we've seen for this - it specifically addresses our needs for a practical means of gaining revenue from content,' said Richard Withey, Managing Director of Independent Digital.

'Revenue ultimately comes from providing our readers with a useful service, and Roundpoint allows us to deliver 50 Best to PDA users in an easy-to-use and attractive format.'

'An increasing number of media businesses are wanting to realize the value of their digital content,' said Trevor Shonfeld, CEO of Roundpoint. 'The Independent is set to gain an immediate return on their existing content through the use of our patented technology.'

Smooth and seamless integration

'Producing the PDA edition of 50 Best from our existing XML publishing system was straightforward,' said Withey. 'There were no hitches, and no knock-on effects on our existing systems. Roundpoint assured us that adding one-step publishing to mobile devices would be easy, and it was. It was also very affordable and did not require any third parties.'

The Independent used Roundpoint's toolset to create content for both PalmOS and Windows CE devices without any modification of the original XML source. This content is packaged for easy download and installation on these devices via the end users' PCs. The user then browses the guide on the PDA using the Roundpoint viewer which, with its unique navigation model, makes it simple to both navigate and read the content.
