Proposals for Cambridge Station Square given green light

Property development company Brookgate has been granted planning consent to develop the Station Square, part of the CB1 masterplan. The plans promise to deliver significant improvements to the area surrounding Cambridge Station.

The plans, which will provide significant improvements for all rail users, commuters, pedestrians and cyclists to the area, are located next to the existing station building.  The space outside the station will be a pedestrianised area, and there will be a bus only connection between Station Road and the new Bus Interchange.

Following extensive consultation with the key stakeholders, including Cambridge City Licensed Taxis, Greater Anglia, Network Rail, Cambridge Cycling Campaign, British Transport Police and the Disability Panel, the proposals were amended to include a two vehicle wide taxi drop-off and pick-up area for 21 taxis. An additional taxi queuing area will also operate in the station car park, with a CCTV link for the main square for taxi drivers.

Skanska also received planning permission for the new Northern Access Road which will provide access to the New Station Square and the approved 3000 space cycle park.

A Spokesman said:  “Receiving planning permission for our proposals is a significant step forward for CB1. The Station Square will create a gateway for Cambridge, significantly improving the area around the train station and making a real difference for local residents, visitors and commuters alike, while the Northern Access Road will facilitate the delivery of a number of the public benefits of the CB1 masterplan.”

The Station Square will be funded as part of the One Station Square office development and the cycle park as part of the new Accor Hotel both of which are due to get underway in Q2 2014. These developments are a part of the wider CB1 masterplan aimed at creating new public spaces for a vibrant mixed-use city centre scheme consisting of commercial, leisure and residential space built around a radically improved public transport interchange at the heart of Cambridge.
