Redevelopment work underway at the Abbey

The long-awaited redevelopment work on Cambridge United's Abbey Stadium has begun.

A giant cherry-picker crane was finally brought in yesterday (Weds) after several postponements to move the floodlight towers.

The repositioning of the towers is an important step in the plans to extend the stadium and bring it up to scratch.

Work had been delayed because of the wettest winter in Cambridge since 1776.

And it only went ahead when the then Environment secretary allowed the city council to lease extra land nearby.

The land will be used by allotment holders who were forced to give up their plots to allow the extension to the stadium.
