Speechmatics publishes its annual Voice Report

Speechmatics has published its annual Voice Report, surveying businesses of all sizes on the state of voice technology in 2022.

Voice is a huge and growing market - PWC found that 43% of respondents to a recent survey use a smart home voice assistant and in 2020, 50% of all searches across the internet were voice-based.

Key findings include:

  • Banking and Healthcare were named the two industries most likely to increase their need for voice technology in the continued COVID-19 pandemic

  • One third have experienced AI bias first hand, with just 55% believe the majority of voices are understood

  • Accent and Dialect were seen as the two main factors that prevent the technology gaining full accuracy, followed by ethnicity and location

  • Almost 90% of respondents believed the English language was best served by voice tech

  • Cantonese is the most often requested “new” language, with Brazilian-Portuguese and Swiss-German in second place

  • Speaker change, speaker diarization and punctuation topped the list of the most welcome extra features
