Station Square works begin

Brookgate and Abellio Greater Anglia have started works to develop the train station and Station Square as part of the CB1 masterplan, transforming Cambridge Station as the gateway to the city.

The works mark an important stage in the delivery of a new station ticket hall, public square, hotel and the UK’s largest cycle park

The space outside of the station will be regenerated as it becomes a pedestrianised area, with a bus only connection between Station Road and the new Bus Interchange.

Abellio Greater Anglia has started works on redesigning the train station too, which will create a new, enlarged ticket hall and improved customer service and retail partner facilities.

The new Ibis Hotel and cycle park will be built by Galliford Try. It will begin the build in November with completion expected to be spring 2016. This will create a 231 bed hotel, which will also include 5,282 sq ft of restaurants and retail units fronting the Station Square and 3,000 new cycle spaces to cater for the growing number of cyclists using the parking area at the station.

Wates has now commenced site preparation works to make way for a new speculative office scheme at One The Square. Main preliminary works are due to start later this month, followed by a 47-week programme to prepare the site.

Network Rail has worked in collaboration with Brookgate and Abellio Greater Anglia on the development, providing land and securing the necessary consents for the scheme to proceed.

The works will be carried out in stages and will result in the partial removal and relocation of both cycle parking and the taxi rank over the forthcoming months, with regular notices and information to be distributed to those affected.

Sven Topel, Chief Executive of Brookgate said: “This is an exciting point in the CB1 masterplan as it will create a more accessible and user friendly area both inside and outside the train station. As one of the main entry points to the city it is important that we create a welcoming environment for our visitors and these developments will help to provide that. We are working closely with our contractors, Abellio Greater Anglia and Network Rail to ensure the works cause minimal disruption for the local community and commuters.”

Phil Shortman, Business Unit Director, Wates Construction, Northern Home Counties & East, commented: “Cambridge is a world class centre of research excellence and Brookgate’s continued investment will significantly enhance the city’s reputation and transform the gateway into the historic centre. Wates’ role in delivering the CB1 scheme, including our current delivery of 22 Station Road, is testament to our position as a trusted contractor. We will spend the coming months working in close partnership with our CB1 neighbours to ensure that we are considerate towards the local community during these our work to contribute to this ambitious regeneration project.”

Simone Bailey, Asset Management Director, Abellio Greater Anglia said: “The work underway at Cambridge will transform the station area and greatly improve the customer facilities for rail passengers and visitors at one of the region’s busiest stations, and provide better access for cyclists, pedestrians and those using public transport. We are working closely with our partners to minimise any inconvenience to station users whilst the improvements are taking place.”

The Station Square is funded as part of the One Station Square office development and the cycle park as part of the new Ibis Hotel. These developments are a part of the wider CB1 masterplan aimed at creating new public spaces for a vibrant mixed-use city centre scheme consisting of commercial, leisure and residential space built around a radically improved public transport interchange at the heart of Cambridge.
