Tesco goes online in US

Top UK supermarket Tesco has launched its new internet home shopping service in the US.

The company unveiled the new Safeway.com last night, claiming it offers the 'next generation' of online grocery shopping.

The launch comes six months after Tesco and Safeway.com joined forces to 'revolutionise' home shopping in the US.

Experts at Tesco.com's UK HQ have been working with their US counterparts on the project.

Tesco.com chief John Browett said: 'Our research has shown that customers in the USA want the same as their British counterparts from their home shopping service - low prices, a full range of products and convenience.'

US customers' orders will be delivered from local stares rather than warehouses.

Tesco.com is the world's largest online grocery retailer with more than 1 million registered users and 70,000 orders a week.

Bosses hope to take advantage of the massive potential US market. Sixty per cent of Americans have internet access but the online grocery market is currently smaller than in the UK.
