Virata takes bullish line on sales slip

Virata reports first quarter sales up five per cent to 14.

5 million but down 27 per cent on a year ago.

Boss, Charles Cotton remains bullish: 'Industry analysts project that global DSL (digital subscriber line) installations will more than double this year, based on strong consumer demand for broadband services.

'While there is always the potential for swings in a fast-growing market, we believe the brunt of the correction is now behind us. Virata is well-positioned in key growth markets including China, Germany, Japan and Taiwan.'

Virata provides software and semi-conductors to manufacturers in DSL, wireless, satellite and other broadband networking equipment.

It became one of Cambridge's first billion dollar companies and was founded by Prof Andy Hopper and Hermann Hauser, initially in another area of communications equipment.

The winning piece of kit was just a part of this and discovered by accident as the company's key to global success.
