Workshop explores neurosciences and brain tumour research

A one-day workshop “Neurosciences and Brain Tumour Research: Joining Forces for Greater Impact” has been organised by the MRC and the Brain Tumour Research charity, to bring together the neurosciences and brain tumour research communities and discuss challenges, build partnerships and learn about funding opportunities.

Workshop and information event

A Task and Finish Working Group, chaired by Chris Witty (DHSC Chief Scientific Adviser), was established in 2016 as a direct result of a parliamentary debate on the funding of brain tumour research in the UK. Both the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Brain Tumour Research charity were involved in the process as group members. A report by the group was published in February 2018, and it identified significant opportunities for the brain tumour and neuroscience communities to work in partnership.

In response to the report, the MRC and the Brain Tumour Research charity are jointly organising a workshop with the purpose of:

  • bringing together the neurosciences and brain tumour research communities
  • highlighting some of the most exciting technologies and techniques available
  • building partnerships between both communities
  • discussing funding opportunities for multidisciplinary applications aiming to tackle the challenges facing brain tumour research.

This workshop is free, and will take place on the 23 October 2018 at the BEIS Conference Centre, 1 Victoria Street, London, SW1E 5ND.

The event will consist of:

  • an overview of available funding schemes for cancer research at the MRC
  • moderated discussions with active participation from attendees, focusing on:

- cellular models, emerging technologies and systems biology
- biomarkers, early diagnostics, therapeutics and patient stratification
- drug delivery, microenvironment and stroma, vasculature and the brain-blood barrier, immunomodulation
- functional imaging, EEG, MRI, animal models to patients

  • a plenary lecture by Professor John Hardy, Institute of Neurology, UCL
  • plenty of opportunities for networking and informal discussions.

A final workshop agenda is available on the MRC website (PDF, 129KB).

How to register for the workshop

We expect that participants will be positioned to lead new research activities and seek MRC funding. Applications for this workshop are open to researchers with expertise in either neurosciences or brain tumours who are considering projects that might benefit from multidisciplinary expertise.

To apply, please fill in this online survey. Please see details below on how the information provided will be used.

Applications must be received by 17:00 on 18 September 2018. Applicants will be informed of the outcome via email by the end of September 2018.

How will we use your data?

The survey answers will be used by the MRC and Brain Tumour Research to determine the level of interest in the Workshop. As places are limited, the data will also be used to identify participants who might benefit most from attending. Preference will be given to researchers with an interest in, and/or experience of multidisciplinary research.

If we are able to invite you to participate in the workshop, the information provided will also be used to manage your attendance. All personal data provided will be held securely by the MRC and will only be accessible to those supporting the workshop, including representatives of Brain Tumour Research. The information provided will be deleted one month after the event is held.

Data Protection Act 2018

All personal data provided will be processed by the MRC, part of UK Research and Innovation, in accordance with the UK Data Protection Act. Further information can be found on the UK Research and Innovation Privacy Notice.
