Explore Independent Cambridge: Bridges

With the recent launch of the third edition of Independent Cambridge - the definitive guide to ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network resumes its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: the popular café, Bridges.

Locals may have noticed some changes here – classy new paintwork, an ever-changing and always interesting window display and also a name change. Originally Bridges Patisserie and now just Bridges, this is not a re-branding exercise – it’s a deliberate move to a much healthier approach for this family-run business.

Take one look at the Bridges’ team and you can see their passion for serving food that is fresh and nutritious is not a passing fad – it’s a way of life. Knowledgeable about nutrition, owner Chan Yip is always happy to discuss dietary matters, offering help and advice about the vitamin and mineral properties of the cafe’s menu.

Something you must try is the range of juices and smoothies – carefully developed to keep customers feeling on top of their game.

The food that comes out of the Bridges’ kitchen is not just healthy, it’s beautifully presented too. Chan sees every plate as a frame, and the food the artwork upon it – from the numerous Chinese dishes to his beautiful salads.

Not to say that cakes are off the menu. Sweet treats are still available but some have had the ‘Chan treatment’ and the recipes modified to contain less sugar – clever!
