Considering visiting the pub of the year?

The Cock in the picturesque riverside village of Hemingford Grey, Cambridgeshire, has just been voted the Good Pub Guide’s National Award Winner. Although also a County Dining Award winner, it still retains a welcome for casual drinkers and is the perfect stop on a cycle ride or walk.

People visiting the area (especially this Sunday 9th September the annual Hemingfords Regatta) can go to myViewRanger.com for an easy-to-follow cycle/walking route which goes right past the door of The Cock - and download it for free directly to their phone.

ViewRanger, an easy-to-use off-road GPS, is ideal for spontaneous exploration. It allows you to download to your phone a choice of free maps, or paid-for Ordnance Survey mapping, with navigational aids to keep you on course. There are recommended walking, cycling and riding routes to follow and you can share favourites with other members of a growing community of users.

The suggested route is just over 5.5 miles long and takes in Hemingford Grey’s neighbouring village of Hemingford Abbots as well as Houghton (complete with watermill and National Trust tea rooms) and the quaint market town of St Ives.

The Cock is also a real ale pub and CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale) recently partnered with ViewRanger to make routes and pub information from two of its popular 'Pub Walks’ books for London and Edinburgh available via the ViewRanger app.

The route Houghton Mill to St Ives can be downloaded for free at:

Basic maps are downloadable free to the ViewRanger app to which premium maps with more detail can be added. There is  a vast number of guided routes to browse, created by other individuals or leading outdoor publishers such as the AA, Walkingworld, Le Manoir Hotel, Cumbria Tourism, CycleCity Guides and Nick Cotton Rides.

Additional features such as an integral sports computer and links to Facebook and Twitter can also make the walk or cycle ride more fun.– more information can be found on www.myviewranger.com
