Global Cambridge event in Singapore

A prestigious event next month in Singapore bringing together senior Cambridge academics and eminent alumni experts will focus on two of the key issues facing governments across the globe, Public Health and Finance.

It will take place at the Intercontinental Hotel on Sunday 7 April with an afternoon of lectures and debate followed by a gala reception.

Guests of honour will include the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, and two Cambridge alumni from the Singapore Government. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnan read an MPhil in Economics at Wolfson College in 1981 and 1982 and Singapore Permanent Secretary for Health Mrs Tan Ching Yee was an Economics undergraduate at Selwyn College between 1983 and 1986.

The Deputy Prime Minister will deliver a keynote speech at the start of the afternoon.

Lectures will be given by eminent Cambridge historian Professor Martin Daunton, Master of Trinity Hall, who is also Chairman of the University’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Dr Simon Taylor, Director of the Cambridge Master of Finance Degree at Cambridge Judge Business School.

Martin Daunton’s lecture, entitled “This time it’s different: History and the financial crisis” discusses whether the current global recession is comparable with the Great Depression of the 1930s, and are there any lessons of history.

He will argue two points: that the search for historical “lessons” is dangerous, for the context is radically different and leads to inappropriate recommendations on policy. This time it really is different.

Secondly, that history does matter, but in a different way to searching for misleading historical analogies. He will discuss how we need to understand the long-term origins of the current crisis. We need to understand the emergence of the institutions that are responding to the current crisis.

Simon Taylor’s lecture, “What does the future hold for Western banks” will draw on his experience as a former senior executive at JPMorgan and Citigroup.

The ensuing debate, “What can we learn from the Singapore Health Service”, will be chaired by the Cambridge Pro-Vice-Chancellor for International Strategy, Dr Jennifer Barnes. The Permanent Secretary, The Vice-Chancellor and Professor Dame Carol Black, Principal of Newnham College, will be on the panel together with Martin Daunton and Simon Taylor.

The programme will run from 1.30pm to 6pm and will be followed by a Gala Reception hosted by the Cambridge Society of Singapore providing excellent networking opportunities.

Limited tickets for this event for alumni and their guests are now on sale priced S$97.87 / £50. To buy click here: BOOK ONLINE
