Walking along Magdalene Street, as the pavements begin to narrow and the buildings go back in time, there, nestled beneath the eaves of a beautiful 16th century building, is Bowns and Bis. The door opens into a large, light and airy room, with rails of gorgeous cocktail dresses, elegant workwear and wedding outfits on every rail. The back of the shop leads you through next door to ‘Bis’, another delightful room, with weekend clothing, casual shoes and accessories.
The shop is the inspiration of Rosalind Bown: since studying fashion design in London, Rosalind has worked in most aspects of the trade from retail to bespoke tailoring. Bowns and Bis was established more than 14 years ago and, thanks to Rosalind’s experience and brilliance in interpreting the next season’s look, represents everything a shopper could wish for in the search for designer clothes.
Initially championing the ‘Best of British’ designers, the collection includes Paul Smith, Nicole Fahri and Vivienne Westwood. In among these favourites the selection has now broadened to include the most elegant designers from Paul and Joe and Carven to Schummacher and L’Agence, bringing the most exciting international labels together under one roof.

Celebrating Independent Retail Month, the lovely local boutiques - including Bowns & Bis - featured in the Independent Cambridge book will be flaunting their finest at a fashion show in Cambridge, in aid of Maggie’s Wallace Cancer Care Centre. Taking place on 11 July at The Cambridge Union Society, 9A Bridge Street, Cambridge CB2 1UB (7.30pm), tickets cost just £10 (including a glass of wine) with money raised going to Maggie’s Wallace Cancer Care Centre (Registered Charity Number: SC024414).
