New CogniDox version adds Product Manager tools

Cognidox Limited, a leading provider of smart product document management technology, launches new software version for its flagship document management platform. It includes an online editing facility for the widely used Document Holder feature and support for a new Compound Document module.

The new version includes advanced features specifically for Product Managers. One of the key responsibilities of a product manager is to communicate and coordinate the product release process. The faster and more agile their delivery, the more an organisation needs control over the configuration of parts that make up a product version.

Document Holders are a CogniDox feature widely used by existing customers for product release. A document holder (DH) is a controlled part number based on a standard XML layout that contains lists of other documents. Common applications include capturing product release configuration data, such as hardware and/or software versions, user guides or training materials.

A new online DH editor provides a (company-configurable) set of XML templates, enabling non-technical personnel to easily create new documents or edit existing files. Users can search or browse for similar examples, or they can clone a variant from another. Once they have the basic structure they can add document references to build up the configuration of parts. Sections from other DHs can be copied into a new DH using intuitive drag-and-drop functionality.

Document holders can be published to a customer web portal as a container for storing other documents, which greatly simplifies the product/software launch process by reducing publication overheads to a single document, with all referenced information automatically included.

The new online DH editor is in direct response to feedback received from existing users. Comments included; “However useful the DH concept, the ideal solution should not require download and manual edit of an XML file before uploading it again”. Several companies asked for an online editor that allowed users to open/check-out a DH file, edit it and check it back in again, all within the CogniDox framework.

In addition to its online DH editor, CogniDox now has support for a new type of DH called a Compound Document Holder. A compound document is dynamically amalgamated from a set of PDF documents into a single combined PDF, but displayed if and only if the end-user has the necessary permissions to view specific content. The compound PDF is displayed using a dedicated viewer application, which supports user actions such as page navigation, full-screen display, search, and more.

An example of its use is a user handbook that is constructed according to a combination of end-user factors such as the company they work for and their job role or level of experience within that company.

These are just two of the 44 new feature additions. Speaking about the release, CEO Paul Walsh said: “It’s important to us that 40% of the new features, including the headline ones, directly result from customer suggestions. CogniDox is now an integral part of their business process improvement and we are responsive to their requests.”

The latest software release is available for download from the Cognidox support site and is free for all customers with a current subscription.
