Tanzanian grassroots NGO agrees to host CDI in Dar es Salaam

Following talks with Director Tim Ndezi, the Centre for Community Initiatives (CCI) Tanzania has agreed to host the Cambridge Development Initiative in Dar es Salaam.

CCI works in five Tanzanian cities and is the national partner of the prominent global network Slum-Dwellers International as well as NGOs like Homeless International. Dedicated to upgrading slums, they work with the Tanzanian Federation of the Urban Poor on resettlement, microfinance, and water and sanitation. CCI has also created a city-wide slum profile of Dar es Salaam which is invaluable in identifying communities' requirements and in designing well-targeted assistance.

The Centre has experience of hosting large student initiatives like CDI in a sustainable manner: for several years now, it has organised field trips of up to thirty students from Aalto University in Finland. Students from Aalto have been involved in creating master plans for slum upgrading and in developing designs and business strategies with local women's groups. We are now working with CCI to prepare our assessment trip to Dar es Salaam in September 2013 during which we will be able to meet entrepreneurs, community leaders as well as local authorities.

The Centre for Community Initiatives enables us to engage with our target communities directly and is an invaluable asset in making our vision reality.
