Addenbrooke’s diabetes team scoops three national awards

The adult diabetes team at Addenbrooke’s has won three awards at the only national event that recognises and rewards excellence in diabetes management and clinical practice.

Two innovative projects at the Cambridge hospital were awarded best in their category and one of them was picked as only one of two ‘best of the best’ winners. The Addenbrooke’s team were the only team to win three awards.

The third annual Quality in Care (QiC) Diabetes Programme Awards celebrates and shares good practice in diabetes management, education and patient care.

The team won the award for ‘Best admissions avoidance and/or safe discharge initiative’ category, for their type 1 diabetes out-of-hours support service. They also won the ‘Best cross-organisational partnership – reaching out beyond the traditional team’ for their diabetes case management service. This is reducing the numbers of patients re-admitted to hospital who have dangerously high glucose in their blood.

The cross-organisational partnership initiative also won the ‘best educator-led’ service and involved working closely with the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Foundation Trust.

The diabetes service at Addenbrooke’s, part of Cambridge University Hospitals, is now one of the leading centres in the country for type 1 diabetes. This includes insulin pump therapy and type 1 diabetes structured education. Addenbrooke’s is now a major regional centre for diabetes in pregnancy and diabetes foot management.

David Simmons, consultant diabetologist at CUH, said: “It’s fantastic that we have won these prestigious awards and demonstrates the outstanding diabetes services that we offer people in Cambridgeshire and beyond. Through our groundbreaking work, we are improving quality, reducing waiting times, saving money and, most importantly, saving lives.

“Having won the award for best educator is recognition of our strength in this field and we hope we will be able to spread the best practice to other Trusts across the country.”
