Independent Cambridge: contemporary art

Cambridge boasts a fantastic range of independent traders, but many people are unaware of what's available right on our doorstep. The newly-published second edition of the colourful and informative book, Independent Cambridge, celebrates these businesses, a selection of which are highlighted here. This week: beautiful art in a relaxed setting at Cambridge Contemporary Art.

It is very easy to feel just a little bit intimidated about stepping into an art gallery. You really want to go and have a closer look at what’s on show, but may be put off by wondering if you will understand it or be able to afford to buy anything on display.

At cambridge contemporary art, in the beautiful and historic Trinity Street, you need not worry about such things. The staff are genuinely friendly and welcoming and more than happy to talk to you about the pieces on show and to tell you about the artists and craftspeople behind the work.

Specialising in handmade prints, paintings, sculptures and crafts, the gallery first opened in 1990 and shows the work of over 100 UK-based artists, with a new exhibition every month.

Selected by the Crafts Council for the national list of craft shops and galleries, cambridge contemporary art also makes buying art easy as it’s part of the nationwide Own Art scheme, which is designed to make it simple and affordable to buy original, high-quality contemporary art and craft. You can borrow up to £2,000, or as little as £100, which is paid back interest-free in equal instalments over a period of ten months. The gallery also offers gift vouchers and runs a wedding list service.

Towards the back of the gallery, it’s also worth noting, is a fantastic selection of art greetings cards – on sale at a price below the amount asked by most High Street card shops. So, as you can see, there really is no reason to feel intimidated by stepping through the door.
