Charged atmosphere promised at Travel Awards ceremony

Companies who have made a massive contribution to reducing congestion and improving the health of their workforce will get to try out electric cars at a special awards ceremony.

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Workplace Travel Plan Awards, hosted by Urban&Civic at Alconbury Weald, is being held tomorrwow (14 March).

The awards, which are in their eighth year, will also be linked to an electric vehicle event taking place on the same day, between 11am and 4pm at the same venue.

Anyone can join the award winners to have the opportunity to view electric vehicles and test drive them.

The annual event highlights the achievements and commitments of organisations to help reduce congestion, save their staff money, and promote sustainable and healthy commuting initiatives.

Dr Dan Gordon, former Paralympian, World and European champion, and now Principal Lecturer of Exercise Physiology at Anglia Ruskin University, will be making a keynote speech. Also making a keynote speech will be Grahame Nix, OBE, Chief Executive of the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

The Awards are run jointly by the Cambridgeshire Travel for Work Partnership (TfW) and Peterborough City Council's Travelchoice teams.

Mark Webb, Business Manager for Cambridgeshire Travel for Work Partnership, said: "From our work with over 160 employment sites, employing over 75,000 commuters, we know that well implemented workplace travel plans have a real effect on congestion, health and carbon emissions.  We are delighted to be rewarding those employers who are travel planning for the benefit of their business, their commuting staff and wider society.”

There are seven stages to the awards, ranging from commitment to travel planning, through to development, implementation and Distinguished Achiever. Travel Plan Awards are achieved by organisations whose travel plans are integral to their business.

Travel plans are a package of measures that aim to encourage employees to reconsider how they travel to work. Green and healthy modes of transport such as walking, cycling, using public transport and car sharing are promoted, along with e-working and working from home.  Business travel is also included in many plans, with measures such as pool bikes, teleconferencing or videoconferencing.
