Cheffins launches first specialist sale of books, stamps, militaria, coins and medals

Next month (Thursday April 3rd) sees Cheffins first specialist sale with a dedicated department for coins, medals, stamps and militaria, alongside the books, prints and maps regularly featured in this sale.

Helen Stewart writes:

This is an exciting development in our range of sales, and we have some truly rare and historically fascinating pieces. Help was enlisted in the form of two local consultants, John Foster and Tony Peers, alongside our regular valuers Charles Ashton and Richard Haywood.

Swords from left; Lot 268, a late 19th century naval sword with gilt mounted scabbard and original leather sheath, initialled ‘J.P.C’. Lot 274, a Katana sword, with irorimune blade back and military mounts. Lot 269, a late 18th/early 19th Century sword, probably Javanese, the hilt with stylised dragon pommel and horn grip. Lot 271, a 19th Century continental court sword, with pierced gilded hilt.

Above: lot 277, Joseph Manton, London; a pair of percussion cap duelling pistols, circa 1821. Manton was a world renowned gunmaker, whose innovative designs proved to be of huge influence on the London gun trade, and in particular the aesthetic of sporting firearms. One of the above pistols bears a plaque of his name.
