Every month something pretty odd, and equally fascinating, appears in the saleroom. This time it caught my eye tucked behind a glass cabinet.
This early 20th Century tin plate clockwork peacock has sadly stopped strutting, but once would have marched proudly showing off his beautiful plumes.
Imagine playing with this delicate toy during the 1920′s and 30′s. It’s infinitely more beautiful and delicate than a modern plastic toy, and has just about stood the test of time. Despite being a redundant ‘strutter’, this peacock would work a treat ‘quirking up’ a dressing table or mantle piece. (Lot 148, £40-60)
Continuing with the peacock theme, this amazing hat is just one of many impressive hats in the sale. We have built up quite the head wear collection this month! From top hats, to panama’s to trilby’s, we have them all (Lot 119 (part), £40-60). Carrie Bradshaw really would be proud of this peacock inspired statement.
March of the Penguin….shakers
If the clockwork peacock doesn’t tickle your fancy than maybe this collection of penguins will! We are holding a small colony of the delightful birds in the saleroom. The King of the penguins though has to be this cocktail shaker! Closely followed by the best dressed penguin I’ve ever seen, sporting a bow tie and bowler hat.
(Lot 96 (part), together with a quantity of horn, ceramic, onyx and silver penguins)
To top off the slightly ‘quirky’ theme, we are offering a pair of George Belcher pencil cartoons created for ‘Punch’ magazine.
The ‘Punch’ publication was founded by Henry Mayhew and Ebenezer Landells in 1841 and soon became a British institution. The magazine, which coined the term ‘cartoon’, famously depicted humour and satire against the backdrop of 19th and early 20th Century Britain.
