October 2012 saw the new-look Earl of Beaconsfield open its doors when Susie Hinchliffe made the change from being a pub regular to being its licensee.
As well as looking for a new challenge, Susie had always been on the lookout for a pub that served lovely wine as well as lovely real ales – and that was a place where female pub-goers could feel comfortable. Add to this a wide range of lagers and ciders, great whiskies, music and food, and the pub’s philosophy starts to become very obvious.
The refurbishment of the Beaconsfield saw a new, welcoming interior, with neutral colours and the nice table-top addition of flowers and candles, a planted courtyard area and a separate pool room off the garden.
Susie has also installed an Italian pizza oven to be able to serve hungry customers a range of stone-baked pizzas.
For wines and whiskies, Susie works with another local independent – Cambridge Wine Merchants – whose experts help to select the tempting range.
Add an ever-changing choice of superb Cask Marque real ales, a selection of refreshing draught lagers, two draught ciders and a growing number of American and European craft lagers and the result is a pretty impressive bar!
So, to the music! A packed weekly calendar sees acoustic and blues jams, Irish folk sessions, and guest acts playing everything from traditional jazz standards through to gypsy swing.
The Beaconsfield has it all – including the most lovable pub dog ever – Smoky Bacon!
