Canadian delegation says ‘CUH stands out from the rest’

A Canadian Minister has visited Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) to learn more about how the Trust translates medical research into patient care.

Ed Fast, the Minister of Trade and the Canadian Life Science trade delegation visited CUH last Friday (5 September). They had flown from Canada for a three-day visit and especially wanted to see what makes CUH so renowned and special.

Dr Mike More, non-executive director and Kate Lancaster, director of corporate affairs took the Minister’s group on a tour of CUH.

Amir Golbang, life science trade commissioner at the High Commission of Canada said: “We chose to come to CUH because it is so well-known around the world. It is not just a hospital to treat patients but has a huge research programme. The Trust has innovative ways of working and we wanted to take this opportunity to see it and why it stands out from the rest.”

The delegation first visited the National Institute and Health Research (NIHR) centre. Here they met Dr John Bradley, clinical director and Caroline Saunders, head of clinical operations, to find out what research is currently being undertaken at CUH. One of the pieces of equipment they looked at was the calorimeter room, a room which allows energy expenditure to be calculated based on measurements of air samples; only two hospitals in the UK have one.

Next they visited the neuro-critical care unit (NCCU) where Professor David Menon took the delegates on a tour of the unit and viewed what equipment is used. Kate Lancaster said: “Today has been a wonderful opportunity to showcase some of the excellent work we do here at CUH.”

Also on the itinerary was the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) institute and the Medical Research Council (MRC). Amir added: “CUH is a prominent hospital known for its research; it has been really fascinating to finally see it. With the move of AstraZeneca to the site it is becoming a very interesting time and hopefully we can learn from each other.”
