Wanting to be surrounded all day by colour was not the only reason Sarah Clark decided to open her own business in November of 2011.
A keen knitter, she knew that Cambridge needed a shop selling premium wools as well as yarns from the local area. She also wanted
to create a place which was friendly, touchy-feely and somewhere where customers could linger and chat over a cup of tea.
Sarah has succeeded in all of the above at The Sheep Shop, which was a finalist in the Cambridge Business Excellence Awards 2013. She stocks a colourful kaleidoscope of luxury yarns including cashmere, llama, alpaca and soft merino wools. A range of gorgeous hand-dyed sock yarns from Cambridge-based indie dyer Sparkleduck are particularly covetous, as are the elegant ‘field to fashion’ clothes and alpaca knitting kits from local company Purl Alpaca Designs.
It’s not just high-end yarns at The Sheep Shop though. Sarah has searched for budget yarns too, that are also lovely and soft and fun
to knit. There’s a great selection of needles, felting materials, crochet hooks, ribbons, buttons, books, patterns – pretty much all you need to get creative.
Don’t worry if you’re not a knitter yet – you can join one of the many knitting and crocheting classes that take place at the shop and
start learning and on The Sheep Shop’s website, you can find details of knitters for hire.
Sarah also runs two knitting groups, holds a variety of one-off events such as arm massages and a knitter-friendly pub quiz at the
Six Bells just off Mill Road, proving what a sociable and community-based pastime knitting can be!
