Independent Cambridge - Cambridge Music Festival

Cambridge Network joins with Independent Cambridge to celebrate the city's vibrant independent sector in a regular series of articles on this site. Read this week about the Cambridge Music Festival, an ambitious series of world-class events which begins tomorrow (Wednesday November 12th) and runs until Saturday November 22nd.

In November 2012, the first Cambridge Music Festival (CMF) under its new director Justin Lee was a great success story. CMF attracted national press coverage as well as audiences and young people from across the region to a wide variety of orchestral, choral and chamber concerts, education projects and a major sound and light projection onto the street-side of King’s College Chapel. The event last year was a similar success.

November 2014 promises the same mix of music, technology and education, with world-class artists in a spectacular programme. Highlights include a rare UK appearance  on November 14th by Philip Glass and his Philip Glass Ensemble performing some of his iconic works from the late 1960s, 70s and 80s.

The acclaimed Russian violinist, Viktoria Mullova, performs Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra (November 16), and the Festival also welcomes the great Russian string quartet, the Borodin Quartet (November 13) and the renowned Berlin Philharmonic String Quintet (November 20).  The Festival closes with Britten’s War Requiem featuring Britten Sinfonia and local players and singers.

CMF also features a series of free activities including games, technology and some new music. MusicLab (from now until Thursday 13 November - In front of Cambridge Junction) is a new interactive music technology installation for people of all ages. Housed in a massive truck, it can hold 30 people taking part in five activities – try out instruments, record yourself, sample using your own or provided sounds. At the end of the day, the public can go online to hear their creations and explore further the world of music.

Other free events include YouTube sensation, Manu Delago, with Aurora Orchestra ( November 14th in a free lunchtime concert) and a new work for keyboards, harps and electronics by FitkinWall (November 21) while the work of young composers and performers is showcased in a Young Composers Network event curated by local students.

Many stunning buildings are home to the Festival’s programme of concerts such as King’s College Chapel, St John’s College Chapel, West Road Concert Hall, the Corn Exchange, the Mumford Theatre, ARU,  and - for Britten's War Requiem - the magnificent Ely Cathedral.
