Independent Cambridge - a seasonal celebration

In a regular series of articles on this site, the Cambridge Network joins with Independent Cambridge to celebrate the fantastic range of independent retailers we have on our doorstep. Read this week about Cambridge Christmas.

For one night a year, in the run-up to Christmas, the Unitarian Church Hall in Victoria Street near Christ’s Pieces Park, is magically transformed with lanterns and fairy lights as a specially selected group of local artists and designer/makers gather to exhibit their work.

This particular Christmas story began in 2008, when Jo Tunmer – a local painter and printmaker – held a one-off artists' event at her house. The show was a huge success and the following year Jo had secured larger premises and Cambridge Christmas moved to its new home at the Church Hall.

Due to limited space, exhibitors are selected by invitation only, ensuring the highest quality of work is on show.  At the 2014 event next Monday (24th November, starting at the earlier time of 12:00 and ending at 8:30pm ) there will be prints and cards from Jo Tunmer Ltd, Alison Hullyer and Roxana de Rond; jewellery by Abi Cochran, Alison Tait, Claire Howieson, Jonathan Deer and Marieke Hordyk; ceramics from Amanda MacPhail and Helen Martino, wire sculpture by Rhiannon Thomas, handmade books by Edel Hopkin; illustrations, cards and gifts from Aurora Cacciapuoti and Jo Clark; and indigo scarves and woodcuts by Clarissa Cochran.

Although the show has got bigger, the ethos of the event remains the same – to provide a place where local artists and crafts professionals can display their work in a warm and personal environment. So while browsing for gifts and chatting to the exhibitors, you can enjoy seasonal offerings of home-made mince pies and mulled cider.

It’s the perfect environment to purchase Christmas presents (or personal treats!), that you just wouldn’t find anywhere else.
