Each year, the Ian O. Ihnatowycz Institute for Leadership at the Ivey Business School at Western University in London, Ontario, grants an award for a leadership article in a top-tier journal that has had the most “impact” three years after publication.
Sucheta shares the award with co-author Susan Mohammed of Pennsylvania State University for their paper entitled “Temporal diversity and team performance: the moderating role of temporal leadership”, which was published in 2011 in the Academy of Management Journal. The award is associated with a $1,000 prize and a plaque.
The paper examines the challenges that face today’s business world in terms of time – including short deadlines, the demands of co-ordinating multiple projects and fluctuating goals.
The paper shows how differing approaches to the use of time can be effectively managed in order to maximise team performance. A study of 71 teams in a business process outsourcing firm in India found that having strong leadership in place to manage the diversity and pace of workers’ approach to time led to an overall positive influence on team performance. In addition, the study highlighted the importance of considering differing approaches to time among individuals in selecting team members and assigning roles.
