Tame your computer - identify the author

In her regular series for Cambridge Network members, software training expert Karen Roem offers handy tips to help you 'Tame your computer'. This week she describes how to display the name of the person who saved a file (Windows Explorer)...

By default, Windows Explorer provides details about an items’ Name, Date Modified, Type and Size. If you share files with your colleagues over a network it might be helpful to see the name of the person who stored the item.

Here’s how:

1.       Open Windows Explorer. (WIN+E, anyone?)

2.       Navigate to the shared drive.

3.       Right-click one of the column headings, such as Date modified

4.       Select Authors from the drop-down list.

5.       If you want, repeat the process and unselect any of the less helpful default details, such as Size.

You can now easily find items created by your colleagues by clicking on the Authors column heading, which sorts all files or folders by the person who saved the file or folder, in alphabetical order.

If you want to set all sub-folders to match the new settings, have a look at http://www.roem.co.uk/tip_360.php

By the way, if you cannot see column headings, you are probably not in Windows’ Details view. Click on the Change your view button located on the Windows Explorer toolbar to cycle through all the options or click on its More options button.

PS I'm committed to sharing the best of what I know with others so please don't keep these tips a secret.
