Independent Cambridge - contemporary art inspired by the natural world

In a regular series of articles on this site, the Cambridge Network joins with Independent Cambridge to celebrate the fantastic range of independent retailers we have on our doorstep. Read this week about Over Gallery.

Just ten miles northwest of Cambridge, past the American Cemetery, is the village of Over. Close to the Great Ouse, there are some beautiful river walks right on its doorstep and the highly-ornamented St Mary’s Church is well worth a visit too. Now, just along the high street in the village, is a new destination – Over Gallery.

Opened in December 2012, the Gallery is the most recent reincarnation of a building very central to the life of the village. Built in 1886, this house-come-shop was once the equivalent of a local department store – even selling ice cream made on-site, with ice brought in from Cambridge. When owner Helen Taylor first moved in, the building was in a near derelict state but has now been transformed in to a lovely home and of course, the wonderful gallery.

Working closely with a small but growing number of artists, Helen has created a space to showcase contemporary work, much of which is local and inspired by the natural world. Paintings, ceramics, glass, jewellery, sculptures, and hand-crafted furniture by a changing programme of artists including Julia Ball, Jo Tumner, Dafila Scott, Katharina Klug and Althea Braithwaite, all add up to a gallery filled with colour, texture and shape.

Exhibitions change regularly throughout the year. There is always a range of studio ceramics, glass and jewellery as well as art cards and wrapping papers – so that the gallery still serves the inhabitants of Over as well as drawing people in for its programme of contemporary art.
