ViewRanger ready with active navigation on Apple Watch

ViewRanger – the app for adventure – is putting active outdoor navigation on your wrist as one of the first apps to be built, tested, and ready for the new Apple Watch.

Craig Wareham, ViewRanger co-founder, said: “I am delighted that ViewRanger is ready for the Apple Watch, as we are excited by the opportunities that smartwatches offer outdoor consumers and professionals. ViewRanger was one of the first apps to be Android Wear™ enabled and ready-to-run on smartwatches from LG, Samsung, and Motorola and so we’ve already seen some of the hands-free benefits that putting ViewRanger on your wrist can deliver.

Used worldwide, ViewRanger is a mapping and navigation app for outdoor recreation and adventure that is compatible with smartwatches, allowing a range of data to be viewed by glancing at your wrist. This includes directions for navigation such as your current coordinates, altitude, heading, plus distance to the next waypoint, point of interest, or to the end of the route. It is also possible to review information about your trip such as the duration, distance travelled and height gained and lost.

Craig added: “A simple glance at ViewRanger running on the Apple Watch provides information on where you are and where you are going, without needing to fish your iPhone out of a backpack or pocket.

“ViewRanger’s support for the Apple Watch integrates graphical elements of the app such as a large navigation arrow that provides active navigation along trail paths. It is also possible to view track statistics about your trip and where you are now.

“This is not an attempt to replicate the smartphone experience: instead it offers a new way to access time sensitive information that will appeal in particular to people out cycling or walking or engaging in any outdoor activity where you need to keep your hands free.

“Using the Apple Watch, people can view key navigation alerts at a glance, with more detailed mapping available on their iPhone if required. It is also easy for people to start recording or tracking every adventure, with pause and restart functionality, keeping their iPhone safely out of harm’s way.”

A proven active navigation app, ViewRanger is used and trusted by outdoor enthusiasts, search and rescue teams and other outdoor professionals throughout the world. It is free to download and is fully functional with global mapping that can be stored offline.
