Arriving at the Lynne Strover Gallery, particularly if you have just come from busy central Cambridge, feels like finding a space to breathe – and to be able to do it deeply and properly.
Situated in Fen Ditton’s historic high street, the gallery was created when this former 19th century school was converted in to both a showroom for art and a stunning home for Lynne. The alterations have created a light and airy space – perfect for showing the contemporary British work of the artists she represents. Originally very Cornish in influence, Lynne’s reputation for giving great respect to the art as well as the artists, has seen her collection evolve to include work from around 30 established artists from all over the country – including paintings by Maggi Hambling, sculptures by Breon O’Casey, ceramics by Nicholas Rena and rugs by Stella Benjamin. Exhibitions (usually mixed shows) are held throughout the year and, more recently, the gallery has proved a stylish venue for hosting events such as artist talks and recitals.
The one aspect which brings together all the works at the gallery, is Lynne’s way of thinking in terms of living spaces. In addition to the intrinsic quality of the individual pieces, the context of interiors in which these are displayed reflects Lynne’s incredible eye for art as well as interior design. Her home is testament to this, having featured in numerous home and style publications.
On a more practical note, there is plenty of available parking, or a cycle ride along the river is an excellent way of visiting. If you want to make a day of it, there is the popular Ancient Shepherds pub nearby and the Crown and Punchbowl in neighbouring Horningsea.
