Independent Cambridge - a burst of Spring at Lynne Strover Gallery

From 29 April to 5 May 2015, the Lynne Strover Gallery in Fen Ditton - one of the organisations featured in Cambridge Network's Independent Cambridge series - will be exhibiting work from a handpicked selection of artists.

Visitors are encouraged to come and take a look at Emma Dunbar’s colourful creations, Rachel Budd’s swirling large-scale abstracts, powerful textured landscapes by Ann Armitage and new prints and paintings by the ever-popular Rosemary Vanns.

All work on display will be available to purchase.

Emma Dunbar, the creator of the painting on this page - ‘Lots of birds in trees’  - looks for decorative qualities in everyday objects and rearranges them to striking effect.  She says: "What excites me about making pictures is trying to capture the essence of a place, a feeling, a thing." Her paintings have been internationally reproduced as greetings cards, posters, limited edition etchings and even fabric designs.

Lynne Strover Gallery, now in its 26th year, is widely regarded as the best commercial art gallery in Cambridge. The gallery is both home and workplace for owner Lynne Strover, who has deftly created an exhibition space that is at once spacious and airy and yet homely and familiar. It is very much in the spirit of Jim Ede’s Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge, which remains to true to his vision of showing modern art in an attractive and comfortable domestic setting.

Even after 26 years in the art business, Lynne still loves her job. She says, “I love the anticipation of preparing for a show, working with the artists and finally seeing their work when it arrives at the gallery Bringing it to a wider audience is both exhilarating and nerve-wracking at the same time!”

Lynne and her former husband acquired the nineteenth century schoolhouse, which is now the gallery, in 1989. They painstakingly restored it and initially ran an antiques business from it. When the marriage ended, Lynne started the gallery as a means to support herself and her sons.
